Strumigenys clypeata, in the clypeata group, is a distinctive species with a broadly rounded clypeus (anteriorly); small dense appressed spatulate hairs on clypeal dorsum and slightly larger spatulate hairs on the lateral portions of the clypeus that project as a regular fringe, which curves anteriorly; relatively fine small teeth; and a number of flagellate hairs on the head (see photo of face above). This generally appears to have a small diastema, but the length of that gap is variable and it keys out twice in Bolton's key (2000) because of that variability. |
